Male Initiation

To be treated like adults, the young men are supported to stop behaving immaturely

Young Men Want to Be Your Heroes

Thousands of years ago and up until recently, young men were taken out of the village by the men to undergo an initiation into manhood that would guide them to become more respectful and resourceful. Parents no longer have the assistance of their community to raise young men who know what the right things are. By combining ancient indigenous wisdom and modern scientific insight regarding adolescent male biology, YMUW picks up where many current approaches to working with young men fall short.

Our Sons Need Our Help

Without outside help, our sons are at an alarmingly high risk for irresponsibility, laziness, feeling entitled, struggling in school, legal issues, violence and emotional problems – as well as drug, alcohol and digital addiction.

Studies clearly show that young men are suffering from stress related symptoms as they grow up from boyhood into young adulthood. Without the right type of guidance, many of them don’t know how to successfully navigate the challenges of self-doubt, having mature relationships or applying themselves in school and at work.

Without telling them what to do, our trained mentors help young men discover their authentic values and use them as the main source of their wisdom. At the same time, through modeling and with open discussion, the mentors let the young men know that they need adults to help them accomplish what they want to get done.

The Need for Male Initiation

When young men are not knowledgeable about tapping into their masculine wisdom, they grow up with self doubt, often separating themselves from most everyone and everything else. When young men are not taught how to safely let go of their boyhood fears and emotional wounds, they act out their feelings of loneliness with immature behaviors. Their anxiety often misguides their normal hormonal surges into rages of anger or into withdrawing.

The YMUW gives young men the opportunity to experience personal growth by gaining greater self knowledge and confidence as they successfully overcome the physical and emotional challenges of the initiation. They directly experience that they already possess the necessary innate intelligence to find their way in life.

The Main Features of an Initiation

Our rite of passage event is designed to activate four essential virtues in young men that will keep their lives moving in the right direction.

compass20Vulnerability – helping a young man experience the freedom of owning his weaknesses and emotional wounds, will equip him to make safe the feelings of others through his own willingness to be open.

compass20Humility – providing a young man with a secluded outdoor habitat for him to contemplate the awe of Creation, will equip him to understand that he is not the ultimate authority of his or other people’s assistance.

compass20Invincibility – allowing a young man to experience his primal instincts and strengths while knowing when and how to turn on his sense of fearlessness, will equip him to accomplish what he needs to do until he gets it done.

compass20Reliability – supporting a young man in remaining true to his highest values, will equip him to trust himself while earning the respect of his family and friends strength while knowing when and how to turn on his sense of fearlessness, will equip him to accomplish what he needs to do.

WE PROVIDE THE PHYSICAL SPACE AND THE EMOTIONAL SECURITY AND THEN WATCH THEM BREAKTHROUGH THEIR BARRIERS AND ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS!

What Makes Our Approach Unique?

YMUW uses The RIGHT Way® Method in our mentorship model which combines the fields of personal growth, positive psychology and the science of male adolescent brain development – with a healthy dose of ageless indigenous wisdom. At the Weekend, the mentors use this method to draw out the wisdom and leadership abilities of the young men.

By avoiding complicated psychological concepts, the method guides young men to effectively use their intuition, experiences and available resources to maturely handle the toughest issues they’re facing within and in the outside world.

At its core, The RIGHT Way® Method helps young men gain self-respect by discovering their true beliefs and transforming them into productive behaviors. As they develop these abilities, the method guides young men to gallantly engage in heartful acts of courage and courtesy with their families and communities.

When parents are trained in The RIGHT Way® Method they’ll experience more cooperation, trust and love with their sons while mentoring them to become happier and more independent.

What Is RIGHT™ ?

RIGHT™  stands for five universal virtues and values that help families convert their issues of relational conflict and self doubt into mutually beneficial relationships based on greater care and cooperation. YMUW holds these virtues and values in the highest regard:

  • Respect — esteeming with reverence
  • Intelligence — applying intuition and experience into wisdom
  • Gallantry — engaging in heartful acts of courage and courtesy
  • Humor — celebrating with amusement and gratitude
  • True — living life with integrity

These five virtues can be used to find the answers to the biggest challenges parents and sons routinely confront in their homes. With all family members working together to have a more peaceful home, parents enjoy more love and young men relax, knowing they’re being prepared for a life of happiness and independence.

Young men want to take good care of things. We’ve been blessed to have spent countless hours with young men engaged in ceremonies where they reveal their visions of a better world. We’ve heard them pray, with tears in their eyes, about their desires to make a difference in society.

Your son needs his family and his mentors to help him realize his true potential. YMUW gives him the safe place he needs to rediscover his natural masculine wisdom and express it freely. It’s an experience he won’t ever forget!
